"Growing up, an Asian pear signified the love of an elder, a costly and precious fruit given for our nourishment and pleasure. These pears, while native to Asia, are now grown here. To me, they represent how all of us — our parents, grandparents, those of us who immigrated here and were born here — we belong here. Amidst the hate and violence we’re experiencing, I think of this Korean phrase I'd hear growing up, that my mother and late grandmothers would say to me — 힘내 — that is, bear up, take heart, gather strength. I hope we can keep building each other up with this kind of conviction, strength and care in our community right now."
